Postponement of the ASAPA conference
After careful deliberation the ASAPA Council and organizing committee of the 2021 ASAPA biennial meeting that was planned for June 2021 in Lesotho, decided to postpone the meeting until 2022. The organizing committee for the 2021 meeting will have limited opportunity to get together and do fundraising, set up a website and arrange accommodation. This would be the case at least until October/November 2020. Moreover, SAfA rescheduled their meeting to mid-August 2021 and WAC theirs to 4-9 July 2021. Many ASAPA members are members of WAC and SAfA as well, and will not be able to attend all three conferences due to the time and cost involved. The SAASC Daily Digging Digest #1: Digging the COVID19 boredom a shallow grave – one trowel at a time.
Recently there has been an increase in our daily social media news feeds regarding COVID19 updates, fake news, home remedies - and of course recipes for pineapple beer. So, to break the monotony of the lockdown here is the first of our daily archaeology news updates.
A few days ago SAASC posted an invitation to the UJ Palaeoscinces online forum. During this online event, Paleo-anthropologist Stephanie Baker will talk about Drimolene Cave and DNH 134, the oldest Homo erectus in the world, while also placing the cave and its fossils in their broader global significance. So in preparation for the talk, which we at SAASC are very excited about, we thought we would present a brief background to the cave in our first-ever “The SAASC Daily Digging Digest”.
In terms of its regional context, the Drimolen caves are located in the Cradle of Humankind a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Johannesburg. The Caves were discovered in 1922 by Dr Andre Keyser and has yielded more than 155 hominin specimens including Paranthropus robustus and early Homo, as well as fauna, bones and tools.
What makes the New Discovery of the Homo erectus fossils so significant is that it could potentially prove that the origins of modern humans could have been in Southern Africa and not Eastern Africa as has been believed up until now. The new date for this human ancestor dates back as far as 2.04 million years ago and was retrieved by dating three groups of hominins with electron spin resonance, palaeomagnetism, and uranium-lead dating.
