NRF/DST SARChI CHAIR IN THE ORIGINS OF MODERN BEHAVIOUR

The National Research Foundation SARChI Chair in the ‘Origins of Modern Human Behaviour’ is held by Professor C.S. Henshilwood and co-chaired by Prof. S Wurz. There is funding available in 2019 for two Masters (2 years), two Doctoral (3 years) and one post-doctoral position (1 year renewable) based at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. The topic of your research must relate to the field of modern human origins and the Middle and Later Stone age in southern Africa, in the southern Cape. Sites focused on are Blombos Cave, Klipdrift Complex and Klasies River. All applicants must be from a SADC country, and preference will be given South African citizens. The appointment entails you being resident in Johannesburg and carrying out the bulk of your research at Wits University.

Possible themes include shellfish, fish, faunal, lithic, other material culture, heritage management and human origins and education.

The value of the scholarships are as follows:

  • Masters: R70 000 each per annum
  • PhD: R100 000 each per annum
  • Post-Doc: R200 000 per annum
